RG15: Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Cancer

The setting of RG15 is a tertiary centre hospital, with a very large clinical experience in both liver and pancreatic cancer and in liver transplantation. The Centre also performs kidney and pancreas transplantation amongst other clinical activities. In the last 10 years, more than 10,000 patients with hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancers were referred to this Centre. It is the most active centre for liver surgery in Europe (500 liver resections/year) and one of the most active centers for liver transplantation (100-140 liver transplants/year) and pancreas surgery (150 surgeries/year), includes hepatology, interventional gastroenterology and interventional radiology. In the last 5 years more than 5,000 procedures of interventional radiology for the treatment of hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancers were performed, namely transarterial chemoembolization, percutaneous ablation and many other techniques.

Team: three senior surgeons (E Barroso, H Pinto Marques, J Paulino Pereira), one hepatologist (R Perdigoto), one interventional radiologist (T Bilhim), and a team of bioinformaticians (J Pereira-Leal).

Main scope: hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma, liver metastases from colorectal cancer, liver metastases from neuroendocrine cancer, pancreatic cancer, and technical options in liver transplantation.

Other research activities: clinical outcomes after transarterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma, as well as liver regeneration following resection, portal embolization, and hepatic vein embolization; the development of biomarkers for patient stratification.

Relevant collaborations: Johns Hopkins Hospital, Paul Brousse Hospital in Paris and Swiss HPB Center in Zurich.
